History

1990s

One of the unique offerings here at UK Mediation is having our origins in psychotherapy. During the 1990s, Dr Mike Talbot, our founder, is engaged in academic research and private psychotherapy work, while also working in management in both the NHS and in the private sector. Applying this knowledge in the field of mediation has given us an unrivalled set of insights: thoroughly understanding the people who are in conflict as a means to supporting them to resolve that conflict.

-	1994-1999
	Mike Talbot, our founder, carries out pioneering work applying psychotherapy in the field of conflict resolution.

-	May 1999
	UK Mediation is incorporated as a Private Limited Company, originally under the name Midlands Mediation.

2000s

As the business grows and matures, we accumulate all of the accreditations and industry recognition our growing client base expects. Our workplace mediation experience continues to grow as more and more businesses recognise the benefit.

-	February 2001
	We undertake our first major overseas work in Spain and Gibraltar.

-	March 2006
	Due to expansion, the company is re-incorporated as UK Mediation Limited.

-	January 2006
	We work with HM Courts Service to set up The National Mediation Helpline.

-	August 2006
	We are awarded the Investors in People standard.

2010s

With a full decade’s trading history under our belt, we set our sights on further differentiating the business from our competition and achieving more industry and academic recognition.

-	February 2012
	We are awarded the ISO 9001 quality standard.

-	October 2017
	We begin our long standing working relationship with Great Ormond Street Hospital.

-	March 2013
	We launch the UK’s first ever Level 4 mediation qualification.

-	April 2018
	We work with the Northern Ireland Civil Service to set up their internal mediation service.

-	September 2014
	OFQUAL recognises our Level 4 mediator qualification on their Register of Regulated Qualifications.

-	September 2018
	We continue our overseas expansion by working with several mainland European organisations, including the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI).

-	January 2017
	After years of study and research, our CEO, Dr Mike Talbot, achieves a doctorate in psychology.

-	July 2019
	We formally launch our unique relational model of mediation, Re:Talk, arising from Dr Mike Talbot's own doctoral studies, as well as lessons learned from conducting thousands of mediation cases.

2020s

Now recognised as the UK’s leading providers of mediation services and training, and with over 20 years’ experience, we look to continue our expansion and bring the benefits of mediation to a wider audience.

-	January 2021
	Our Level 4 qualification is formally recognised as a ‘Recognised Mediator Training Program’ (RMTP) by the International Mediation Institute (IMI).

-	December 2025
	The Workplace Mediation Practitioner's Certificate (WMPC) is launched, offering a version of our Level 4 course dedicated entirely to resolving workplace grievance-type disputes.

-	June 2021
	Our industry-leading Conflict Resolution Pathway is officially launched to help provide a routemap for organisations to deal with conflict.

-	December 2025
	The Workplace Mediation Practitioner's Certificate is formally recognised by the Civil Mediation Council as a 'CMC Registered Training Course'.

-	June 2021
	Our European branch, EU Mediation, is set up to serve mainland Europe with our high-quality mediation services and training.

-	May 2026
	UK Mediation achieves Cyber Essentials certification in recognition of our commitment to both cyber security and data protection.

-	October 2024
	Due to increasing business demands, we purchased our first dedicated office building in our current location of Alfreton, Derbyshire.
